James G. Martin, son of Rev. Arthur Morrison Martin and Mary Grubbs Martin, was born in Savannah, Ga., 11 December 1935. In 1960 he received his Ph.D. in chemistry from Princeton University. From 1966 to 1972, Martin served on the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners, serving as chair, 1967-1971. In 1968, he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention.
